If you do your work truly and conscientiously

This fell in my lap the other day and precipitated some thoughts:

Thus an old alchemist gave the following consolation to one of his disciples: "No matter how isolated you are and how lonely you feel, if you do your work truly and conscientiously, unknown friends will come and seek you." — Carl Jung

I find myself in the soups of this question alot — what does it mean to my work? What is mine to do? Here, I read this as the work of growing into yourself, and the work one is to do while here on this earthly plane.
∵
I want to belong, but I don't want to have to try very hard to belong.
∵
My yardstick for authenticity is honesty. How much of myself, in my verbal and bodily articulations, can I reveal truthfully in the presence of others? This is not a measure of distance from a static truth of who I am, but rather a feeling of congruence I can feel in my body. Am I at odds with myself? Am I in integrity? Or have I fallen waywards? No one needs to know how well you are doing but it is important that you know when you have strayed and when you have filed off your edges too much as offerings on the altar of belonging.
